Quick question on oil ?

  • Platinum Donating Member

Well I fired up my 2009 Z1 turbo today.... First time I had it running in a couple years and it fired right up.👍... But we are expecting a big storm on the East Coast..... So I figure I'll romp around on the roads a bit and burn out this 8-year-old gas.

I did check the oil and it is down to the add a half of quart mark....... I believe it calls for 0W40. ? I usually use the Arctic cat oil But there are no dealers around so I went to Walmart and picked this mobile one up. Will this suffice..? I don't need to be breaking down If I am in a hot pursuit by the police. 😂

Cool..thank you. I guess as long as it's the right viscosity and synthetic... The actual brand won't matter. Even though it calls for turbo oil I don't even know what that means I've always used the Arctic cat oil previously

The oil should be changed as well probably but I'm not going to bother. I'm just going to add.

I use mobile one in all my vehicles.

... Thanks for your non reply....

But I doubt anything will go wrong especially when I'm topping it off with fresh 93..... Maybe if it had a carburetor and not fuel injected that might be an issue

There honestly isn't that much left in there.... I had siphoned most of it off. But I've hardly ever had any issues with old gas in any of my machines..... Except for my leaf blower and one chainsaw

it's fuel injected right? where do you think what fuel you didn't get out is living and has likely turned to varnish? might be fine, but I'd surely not gamble on it.

Eight-year-old premium fuel is highly likely to be degraded, oxidized, and unusable for modern engines, as gasoline typically lasts only 6-12 months before forming gum and varnish. Using it can cause severe engine, fuel pump, and injector damage. It is best disposed of safely at a hazardous waste facility.

Key Considerations for 8-Year-Old Fuel:

  • Degradation: Over such a long period, the lighter components of the fuel evaporate, leaving behind heavy, sticky compounds that can ruin fuel systems and clog carburetors.

  • Safety Risks: The fuel may have lost its combustibility or, conversely, become highly unstable.

  • Storage Conditions: While some specialized, sealed, airtight, metal containers can keep fuel usable for longer, eight years likely exceeds that limit.

  • Disposal: Do not pour it down the drain or into the ground. Check with local waste management for hazardous fuel disposal.

If you must test it:

  • Smell: If it smells sour or like varnish (not like fresh gasoline), it is bad.

  • Color: If it is dark or discolored, it is likely oxidized.

If the fuel has sat for eight years, it is safer for the vehicle to drain the tank, clean the fuel system, and refill with fresh gasoline.

8 faukn' years? lol

IF it actually starts, don't fuck around get on it and send it right down RT. 100 through downtown Mackungee holding it right to the frickn' bars!

And take your cell phone with.....me thinks your going to need it.....

Lol... That's actually my plan. I started it up today and it fired right up and idled real smooth. I had it running for a good 10 minutes. Screw it... I'm just going to top it off with some fresh gas. Take a few passes on my property. And then it's off to the races on the roads if they're covered. Actually a bigger worry of mine is the idler wheels. I'm pretty sure the bearings are not in the best of shape. ..... I will stay fairly local for a bit just to make sure everything's okay... And yes I'll have my cell phone with me. Just hope I'm in an area where there's coverage

Thanks.... Didn't even consider that. I was going to fill when it was cold.

Serious about what dumbass....to bring a phone?

And I had always planned to ride down the road WOT. Don't get too many snow day opportunities to do that here. And I still might not.... the latest weather report is not that great they've lowered the amounts quite a bit.

The oil should work ok. I would not run 8 year old gas in any sled especially a turbocharged one. They have a knock sensor but you will be relying on that and the engine will for sure be detonating which means damage. You've had 8 years to drain that fuel out. I would pump it out at the fuel filter and use fresh fuel.

Also, a z1 turbo is the worst sled to use after a big snow dump. Doesn't even sound fun.

Thanks for the reasonable response .. I really don't think there is that much fuel in there. The gauge was always a bit off And I did siphon what I could get out a couple years ago and had added some fresh fuel then., So it's not entirely 8-year-old fuel.... I plan on just throwing a few gallons in there of premium. It seems to be running fine, But I will be running the boondocker boost controller at a low setting, In case of detonation.

Yeah the Z1 can be a handful with the weight on new unpacked snow. I will likely be spinning the track a lot starting at stop signs.. especially with no studs. Kind of wish I kept my f7 instead. But I do plan on running on some major highways if they aren't plowed right away Just to stretch its wings. This thing has been sitting for way too long. I really don't even know why I kept it after I sold my camp. I thought I would be trailering to my BIL place but that's never happened . I was just too spoiled having my own place to ride from and most likely won't be riding anymore .

Well, you were right mnstang.

It really wasn't much fun at all....only went a couple miles. Sled sank right down to pavement on the 11 inches of dry powder. Totally unplowed, unused roads with powder flying over the hood I thought would be fun but the first turn and I realized I had no steering 😆.... Maybe more traveled roads would have been better with the snow packed down a bit.

A couple backfires and the sled stalled when I came to the first intersection had me shitting some bricks. ..But started right back up and ran pretty decent afterwards but I did not want to chance going too far when riding alone. Made a few passes on my street and that was enough for me. .....parked it near my garage and saw a bunch of smoke coming out of hood..I'm thinking "now what".?..come to find out mice had made a nest right on top of the engine and it was smoldering. Lucky it didn't totally ignite and no wires seem to be chewed. A rather interesting day. 😂....might putt around my acreage a bit since we did have about 5 inches prior to this storm that is more hard pack.

.

pictures taken amongst new Mack trucks on display in front of factory or it never ran.....snack

You didn't even pop the hood after 8 years. Why are you on a snowmobile forum?
