Starting over again with new sled

Hay Days is around the corner, and it's got me thinking what all needs to be done with the new sled coming in this fall. Despite the money I saved on the purchase, I'm feeling the pain of what it's going to cost with all of the extras ...

  • Studs, backers and tunnel protectors - gonna go with Fast-Trac this time around vs. Woody's and the "Performance Stud Stars" I've used the past few sleds. @Doug - were you the one who mentioned using their 1.5" studs and the SP backers? That's what I'm looking at, with 153 and combining singles and doubles. I like the round backers better than square, and I also like the built in collar / boss on those backers

  • Ice scratchers - based on my 2018 Assault, these are a must as the Assault seemed to run warmer than the 137 and 129 sleds. I'm leaning towards the OneRig setup that mounts on the rails with their billet insert mounts. I'm willing to hear feedback on other options though ... like the Doo scratchers that mount at the rear of the tunnel. I'm not set in stone on the OneRig setup ... not yet, anyway.

  • Carbides - not sure if I'll spend the money on Triple Points or just go with something simple like Stud Boy or Woody's ... probably the latter

  • Punch lights - had them on my VR1 and can honestly say I won't go without them now! I haven't sold my VR1 yet, so I'll probably pull them off to install on the Assault.

  • FWIW - anyone who's looking to install the tunnel bag, I highly recommend the OneRig mounting plate. It saves your tunnel from getting all scratched / worn. I had it on my VR1 and will move it to my Assault. It saved the area behind the seat big time.

The Ski Doo scratchers work brilliantly on the Assault. They also work on the VR1/XCR. I pull mine when I sell and swap them. The bergstrom triples are pointless IMO. They last longer, but I'd rather have fresh ones when I need them and old ones to bounce off rocks when I want them. Definitely move your punch lights or sell them. You'll get nothing extra with them on your sled.

The other tunnel bag option that works really well and is universal are the Kimpex Connect ones. Superior in many ways to the Linq and cheaper.

Stud Boy Deuce carbides for this guy, I run the 9”.

Some guys also use the tall nut but I have not used them. Had a couple slightly bend over the last low snow seasons. My theory right or wrong is I'd rather have them bend just above the nut than pullout of the track.

Forgot to mention I'm likely going to have the side panels painted and go from the green to black, and then put the OEM decals back on it. So there's a few more bucks I guess.

@Doug - thanks for the pics. I was also debating on the nuts and going with the standard ones vs. taller ones. I figured with that built in collar / boss the regular studs would be just fine.

Just talked to Andy Wenzaff today and pre-season ordered some processive springs for the wife's Dynamix. The dynamix actually take the 2" (2.25ID) springs used for the XCR'

I've been debating on what to keep and what to leave on my VR1 before I sell it. I was thinking I'd pull the dual rate IFS springs that he sent me for my VR1 and keep them for the new Assault Boost ... just to try them out and see how they work. The HD torsion springs, and the FTS that I also got from Andy, I'd sell with the sled this fall. But the more I think of it, I will likely just sell it as is and include the stock springs with it.

The Assault won't likely need any tweaks like the VR1 did as it's already set up a bit stiffer (and I've lost weight so things should be good for this season ... I hope!).

Those progressive springs you get from Andy make all the difference in the ride. They really cleaned up and worked well with the Dynamix Boost my one buddy has. And his XCR, they just eat everything on the trail.

@Doug aren’t the XCR and Dynamix springs are different? I thought they were.

Yes talked to Andy on that yesterday. The spring on the Dynamix is 11" and stock XCR 10". The shock body on the Dynamix has full threads so it can compensate for the shorter spring.

Will at Velocity and Bruce at Southside plus some others ran the progressive springs on their Dynamix sleds last year without any issues. Southside has a video on YouTube where they installed them and have a ride report on the Dynamix.

Here's the progressive spring installed on the Dynamix from Southside's video.

Yeah my bad. It’s the FTS that is different. The IFS are the same as you said.

I sent an email to Andy to ask about the IFS springs and swapping them out with the new Assault, and he unfortunately confirmed I won't be able to. It's due to the 1.75" (VR1) vs. 2" (Assault) difference ... which I guess I should have looked at closer & could have confirmed for myself. I'll have to look at his progressive springs and possibly order a set, but I think I'm gonna hold off until I ride the new sled and see how it feels.

Terry & Chris at Fast-Trac set me up with my stud order yesterday, and I have my tunnel protectors being shipped this week, too. As much as I enjoy the thought of the new Boost, I really do hate this starting over stuff (and the $$ that goes into it!!). The Fast-Trac guys were awesome to talk to and really fun to get a chance to BS with them since they stopped going to Hay Days (which is a story in and of itself!).

Forgot the Assault has the 2" shock body.

I'd still pull the IFS dual rate springs off and sell them. Haven't found anybody that hasn't said the dual-rate or processive springs were not an improvement over the stock springs.
