CNN — President Donald Trump said Tuesday he’s imposing a new 50% tariff on all copper. However, it’s unclear when the new tariff would take effect.

“Today we’re doing copper,” he said at a Cabinet meeting, adding that he believed the rate will be 50%.

This would mark the fourth across-the-board tariff Trump has imposed during his second term. Currently, imported cars and car parts face a 25% tariff while imported steel and aluminum face 50% tariffs.

Trump ordered a Section 232 investigation into copper imports in February.

  • You've been dead for quite a while now already. But you're too fucking stupid to fall over.

  • You seem to be stuck on Tariff's as a tax and not the fact they're meant to help the country be more competitive against foreign markets, we've lost a lot of our manufacturing to foreign countries whi

  • He is stuck on this because it's what he has been programmed to say. And the people who keep pushing it thinks it makes tariffs sound bad.

Not at all. We were promised no inflation. Copper won't get more expensive here and nothing made from it will either

The United States produces domestically just over half the refined copper it consumes each year. More than two-thirds of that is mined in Arizona, where the development of a massive new mine has been stalled for more than a decade. The remaining refined copper, just shy of 1 million metric tons annually, is imported.

While the White House framed the new tariffs as a way to counter China's dominance of the global market, the United States in fact imports most of its refined copper from the Americas.

Chile, Canada and Peru accounted for more than 90% of refined copper imports last year, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

However, China is expanding its control over world copper mining through its major investments in mines in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

The DRC is now the world's second-largest copper miner after overtaking Peru, due in large part to massive Chinese investment in the African country's mining sector.

If 90% of your imports come from the Americas how does the tarrif affect China?

Way to change the goal posts. The comments were that these tariffs will not have any effect on pricing and that things will stay the same. Can I assume by your punt and goal post change that you know that is wrong?

Original post is about tarrifs on copper, since it's mainecunt who posted we can assume he's crying about it ending the world.

My post is some facts on the topic.

One of those facts is that China is trying to take over the world trade on copper and lots of other minerals, regular and rare earth.

Another is showing where the US gets its copper from.

If you can explain how that is a punt, or moving the goalpost, any more than saying it's part of the plan to eliminate the penny, I'm all ears

You were responding to my statement that it won't cause inflation and instead supported it with a different reason ignoring inflation.

So are you agreeing that'll it will cause inflation?

If I was responding to it, I would have quoted it, just like I did here.

As far as inflation, I haven't seen any data that shows it coming anywhere near your predictions

The hashtag and location of the post right after mine sort of said differently. And of course, I am not interested in Chinese dominance in anything. As for:

Again skirting the question. Will a 50% tariff on copper create inflated copper prices? You seem unwilling to say no....

Cost more than a penny to make already. Been like that for a long time.

Since you wanted to answer though how about answer the question. With a 50% tariff on copper you believe the price of copper products won't go up?

I imagine it should. Really not too concerned, No looking to rewire my house anytime soon.

And whatever else might contain copper WGAS.

It's all good and should bolster domestic copper production. 👍
