Reopen H-58 to Miners Castle for Snowmobiling

On July 7, 2025, at 4:00 PM, we attended the Alger County Road Commission board meeting to discuss the closure of Snowmobile Trail 422.

Board Discussion: Of the three voting members of the Alger County Road Commission, one member supports reopening the trail on the existing road. The other two members prefer to conduct further research before making a decision.

Michigan Laws Discussed:

MCL Section 324.82119 and MCL Section 324.82124

Landowner Communication: The Road Commission plans to send a letter to the landowner to explore the possibility of an alternate route for the trail. Efforts by the DNR and Alger SORVA have been a dead end.

Funding Requests: The Commission is also drafting letters to legislators to request additional funding for road maintenance to support trail operations.

Current Status: No further updates are available at this time. We remain hopeful that the Road Commission will recognize snowmobiles as a standard and accepted use of roads in our community, given the lack of viable alternative routes.

Road Sign Picture Attached: All roads, with the exception of H15 from Shingleton to the Bear Trap, are legal to ride Right - of - Way or Shoulder of all road in Alger County.

We will continue to work on the situation and provide updates as new information becomes available.
