Not even a good guess. I did get to see them twice during the mid “70’s at the old St Paul Civic Center. The smell of Mexico was everywhere.

Junior Johnson lost about 5hp when he ran the tailpipes, but he gained an advantage. The hot air coming out of his exhaust would do two things. Introduce dirty air into the slip stream behind his car making it more difficult to draft. The heat of the exhaust would also raise the coolant temp of the drafting car by 40-50 degrees. On top of that he was gassing out the driver of the drafting car. Junior was notorious for always trying the find that extra edge.

Good info.  But I can't believe doing that would raise temps. 40-50 degrees.  I mean, thinking about it, the car behind would have to be practically glued to the back bumper of the car in front for a substantial amount of time.

But maybe, hell I don't know?

I’m not sure if you watch much nascar, but they can run 1-5 feet when drafting  the car in front. That area became a dead zone that gets superheated by the exhaust. At those speeds and power output, it doesn’t take much to run out of cooling capacity. 

I'd never thought much about the effect of exhaust when they are drafting.  It does make some sense with the "vacuum" in the pocket.  That air doesn't get near the blending.  I'm a little surprised the side air doesn't get pulled in enough to still make it an issue.

Some of this stuff sounds a little fluffed.  I would think weight loss and power gain would be big factors with side exits.  In the big picture I'd think that's more important than whether the guy following you is running hot.

During the brickyard race, Buddy Baker claimed his coolant temp rose to 250F from the normal 190F while drafting Junior.

The amount of air coming out of a 5.9L engine turning 9000 RPM is enough to knock you on your ass.  It's a ton of superheated air blowing out of those air pumps.

I forget who but a great NASCAR cheating story was when they weighted the car prior to race or qualifying and a team would fill the chassis tubes with lead shot.   When out on the track the driver would pull a lever or what not opening the tube for the shot to spill out and hopefully go up against the wall.

Same for me.  I'd go as far as saying it was good up until the earlier 2000's .. maybe a couple years after Dale died.  When they started changing everything from the cars being identical, the "everyone's a winner" point system, etc. it lost its appeal.

Stop the race and let everyone catch up!!😂
