Trump threatens a 200% tariff on vehicles imported from Mexico

Trump, facing Democrat Kamala Harris in a tight race, has previously pledged that if elected again as president he would set a 100% duty on imported cars and trucks with the goal of aiding the domestic auto industry. But while speaking at a rally at an airport in Juneau, Wisconsin, Trump doubled the figure.

https://www.reuters.com/world/us/trump-threatens-200-tariff-vehicles-imported-mexico-2024-10-06/

Number of light vehicles produced in Mexico in 2023, by brand

General Motors 722,631

Nissan 615,751

Chrysler 467,459

Ford Motor 365,365

Volkswagen 349,227

KIA 256,000

Toyota 250,015

Mazda 202,506

Audi 175,121

Honda 167,249

BMW 117,462

Mercedes Benz 67,846

JAC 22,519

In 2023, the number of light vehicles produced in Mexico reached nearly 3.8 million units, from which roughly 19.1 percent were produced by the American company General Motors. The Japanese car manufacturer Nissan ranked second, producing around 16.3 percent of the total light vehicles during the same year.

looks to me like the domestic car makers would get punished

that 200% tariff probably sounds good in Janesville WI where they used to make full size GM SUVs before 2008

Maybe, just maybe, some of these American car companies will move some production back to America.

JMO, to hard to do between the environmental standards and all of the other red tape and government standards and the wages the unions want. Make it a some what fair playing field they should all have to meet and prove they are following the same environmental & safety standards as the us manufacturers & the same wages us workers are being paid.

we don't want Mexicans coming here

we don't want Mexicans to build US cars

we don't want to pay more for imported goods and services

You do realize there are ways to increase supply of gasoline and its not just what we are pulling out of the ground?  When was the last new refinery that was approved to be built in the US?

The most recent refinery to start operating in the United States was the Texas International Terminals refinery in Channelview, Texas in February 2022. However, the last major refinery built in the United States was in 1977 in Garyville, Louisiana

Energy no different than ANY market we want our companies doing well......within reason.

Is $3.00 corn sustainable for farmers.   Nope.   Does $7.00 corn make sense?   Nope.

Most in any industry especially commodities will tell you there is a sweet spot.

we put corn in our gasoline... :)

American gas and oil producers/refiners have no incentive to lower prices... do they?
