Extra weight would suck but know a few guides in Wyoming that carry 12 gauge defense guns.   First couple rounds 00 Buck followed up by slugs.

This a really shitty thing about Canada. We cannot carry handguns as regular licensed firearms owners. The only way is if you had a particular job like trapper or wilderness protection for a big company. But as regular citizens, no. 

 

We can carry certain rifles and shotguns that fit in the non restricted firearms category but those are only allowed on public land. No national or most provincial parks. 

As a person who likes to camp in bear territory I really wish I could carry my P10F

10mm Buffalo Bore or underwood hard cast rounds for sure.
