Damn, Canadian Milk

Recommended Posts

They created a huge mess with this system now.
guys pay tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands for “quota” which is buying the right to sell milk. It’s turned into a major asset. So to change the system now would bankrupt a lot of the industry

Increase the quota and bankrupt the industry or keep the quotas and bankrupt the consumer.  Interesting proposition for an MBA class at one of your top tier institutions!

Either way it ends up in a dead industry and no milk for consumers.  Looks like some plant based milk products are in your future.

Is this to ensure fixed pricing?

More like stable pricing back in the day, which I’m sure was also fixed. To achieve that they had to make it illegal to sell milk into the market without paying for government permission. These permissions were finite, and transferable. Once you bought it you own it.

those permissions called “quotas” appreciate with the increases in prices of milk. So now when people retire they sell their quota for big money and this attributing to milk prices higher than they need to be

pretty hard system to stop now without massive hurt or government buyouts

Why?

Taxi licences were trading for hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Along comes Uber, customers are happier, taxis still exist but the licences are virtually worthless.

Same would happen with the milk boards.

It simply political. Quebec wants no part of deregulation, therefore no,political, party will do it for fear of losing seats in Quebec.

Anyone who lives near the border buys milk and cheese etc in the US.

Wish I lived closer.
