question of the day on home ownership.

Recommended Posts

As I get older, simplicity keeps getting more and more important.  A townhouse with a garage would be the way to go IMO.  Renting would be a possibility is the numbers made sense.  I'm not a big fan of apartment style condos.  Having an 8 member Indian family with their continuous pot of curry simmering on the stove living across the hall doesn't appeal to me.

I'm going from a split level 2100 sq ft 5 bed, 3 bath and an oversized single car garage.  Wife's small starter home back in the day.  I'm tired of stairs.

New place is about 2600 sq ft new build and not a single stair on the property, 4 bed and 3 bath and 3 car garage.  Same property size...  around a 1/4 acre but 1/2 as much yard due to the footprint of new house.  Robots are going to mow the yard for me and since there is not a single stair a robot will vacuum everyday to keep dog hair picked up.

i hated apartment living when I lived in Seattle and was truely the worst 4 years of my life on living arrangements...  which says a lot cause I lived in shipping containers at which every bush village I worked at prior.  I could never live apartment condo life.

I work for a few associations 1 we call Jurassic park , whole place is retired people who sold there lake homes and downsized to lake shore town homes .

I roll through the place once a week in the winter and if 2 people out of   16 units are in town I am shocked .

after about 5 or 6 yrs about 1/2 say f it and sell the place and rent because they are only in MN 5mo a yr any way .

if u do buy  a place look for 1 that is self managed 55 or older  it saves a ton on management fees and always a few projects to at least stand around and supervise with the rest of the guys if u feel like u need to work .

fresh retired people always looking for shit to do so boards are never a issue to fill.

I plan on keeping the cabin up north and living in that shithole in summers and renting south every winter when the day comes . and eventually just staying south where organs are ez to come by

For your situation and age why would you want to live somewhere that you need or want a heated garage?  Winter's suck at your age.  At 57 I would assume retirements a year or 2 away.  Sell the tools and shit that you would want to keep in a garage cause it's not likely you need tool and shit.  Buy a condo someplace warm

i have no desire to retire. i love what i do. my position offers a lot of time off and a great deal of flexibility to create and do pretty much what i want. as long as the conditions at work continue i'll be there until 70. i've always worked hard and can't see myself not. as for winter, i fucking hate it. but ive got a grandchild on the way and desire to stay close. it's an experience i've always wanted. sometimes i think i'm more excited than my daughter. lol.

i simplified my life about 10 years ago. sold all the motorsports stuff and got into biking, weightlifting, hiking, and photography. then i got the itch for speed again and picked up a sports car. i like to wrench. always have. it's simple, pure, and zen like for me. a garage is like church.

i will be in a nice downtown condo for my next place.  once the kids are gone i don;t need a big ass place,  value wise i won;t save much but walking to everything is what i want.

that's where i'm at not. right smack downtown. everything is within walking distance. it's really nice. not as quiet as the country home, but i'm used to it. the money sure piles up with no home repairs or added expenses to contend with.

Some people put up a pole barn and park a motorhome in it and use the rest of the space for toys.

I like that outside the box thinking. :bc:  I'm about Gregs age, and still like my personal space, where no one can bother me.  I enjoy power tools and lawn/garden equipment for maintaining it.  Its important to keep the mind and body exercised and in shape.  That said, part of the reason we don't have a dog right now is because I just don't want the committment.  And I love dogs.

lol 25 yrs ago I helped a bud build a large poll barn on a nice lot on a trout stream  like 9 acres in Sothern MN.

he put a airstream in the shed and planned on living in it for a yr or 2.

well he is still in it . it is actual pretty cool in side all artificial turf and patio large sunken hot tub huge projector tv  built in BBQ / wrap around bar fire places . sort of reminds me of a 50s holiday in by the pool overlooking a drive in theater

he has been a teacher for all this time and remodeling in summer and still drives the same truck . tight ass has to have a pretty big stack burred someplace around that place.

his whole family is pretty eccentric his uncle is a well known arctic explorer total lib living in N MN who has a pretty unique property

Things change as you get older, we have about 800' of driveway and we have 7 horses, 10 years ago I couldn't imagine anything better, now  the plowing and up keep and all the work involved with the horses, fences, water, hay, feed, and how much harder and longer the days are because of them really has us thinking of changing.  When push comes to shove I don't think the wife will give up the horses, I could give up at least 3 funny how things change.

They were all our former harness racing horses. I gave it up I think 4 years ago this month. I hate the thoughts of someone not taking care of them or selling them for meat.

I loved the racing and working with the animals, but when the casinos came into play the purse money went way up and of course the drugging and blood doping became rampant and I could no longer compete and I would never do the things to any animal some of the trainers do, so I just quit.

Do what I do, live in your parents basement and spend your money on trucks and boats.

You make a good point.

Your getting to an age where taking care of property is a pain in the ass or cuts into your happy time.

have you considered a condo with a garage? We have many here that are over 55 semi detached that have a 2 car garage and everything outside is taken care of.

This.

It all depends if you enjoy the upkeep of a house. Some do, some hate it. It's almost as though the garage is more important than the house in my eyes. But if you're out of snowmobiling you may not need all that much garage space.

Here in NH the obscene property taxes take some off the luster off of owning a home as an investment.

As long as those taxes are deductible we are ok here in NH

So do I, especially those that would give an animal something that will seriously compromise the horse's health or even lead to their death.

My wife has a Quarter horse she used to compete with. She was heavily into competing. We would be on the road to the Quarter Horse shows around Ontario every weekend as well as hauling to the Quarter Horse Congress in Columbus Ohio each fall and 3 trips to the World Championship Show in Oklahoma City. She doesn't compete anymore but devotes a huge amount of time to caring for a riding the horse and it's our biggest monthly expense. As long as the horse is around I'll be #2 or lower on the priority list.

Her idea of ideal retirement would be to move to a farm with a barn for about a dozen horses. That's not something I signed up for. I want a quiet peaceful life on the edge of the lake with the boat tied at the dock and the snowmobile trail running past the front door.
