Sant Singh Chatwal is an Indian-American businessman, owner of the Bombay Palace chain of restaurants and Hampshire Hotels & Resorts.[4] He is the father of socialite Vikram Chatwal and Vivek Chatwal.[5]

Biography

Chatwal was born in India, the third of eight children. He became a United States citizen in 1994.[6]

Chatwal stepped down as CEO of Hampshire Hotels Management in April 2014. He remains the chairman.[7][8]

In 2001, Chatwal became a founder trustee of the American India Foundation (AIF). He is a trustee of the William J. Clinton Foundation.[9][10][11] Chatwal is a past president of International Punjabi Society (IPS) New York.[12]

Chatwal has long been friends with Bill and Hillary Clinton.[13] As per The Washington Post, he helped raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for Hillary Clinton, even as he "battled governments on two continents to escape bankruptcy and millions of dollars in tax liens." The Washington Post also reported that Chatwal "was forced into bankruptcy in 1995 by three Indian banks that claimed he owed them millions from business loans. During the 1990s, the IRS and New York City and state tax authorities also pursued liens, and Chatwal worked out deals to pay them back....In September 2000, Chatwal hosted a half-million dollar fundraiser at that Upper East Side penthouse for Hillary Clinton's Senate campaign.A few months later the FDIC abruptly settled the case, agreeing on Dec. 18, 2000, to let Chatwal pay $125,000 for the loans that it had said caused at least $12 million in losses."

The New York Times reported in 2014 that Chatwal, who pled guilty to skirting federal campaign-finance laws and witness tampering, was sentenced to three years of probation for his crimes. According to the Times, he pled guilty in April 2014 to sending more than $180,000 in campaign contributions from 2007 to 2011 to three federal candidates, identified as Hillary Rodham Clinton, Senator Christopher J. Dodd of Connecticut and Representative Kendrick B. Meek of Florida.

He resides in a 45th-floor penthouse on the Upper East Side of Manhattan.[14]
