I'm looking forward to seeing it.  Hopefully it shows some of the details of what really happened leading up to the blowout.

I'll be interested to hear your take on the movie. :bc:

I have read several investigative reports on the Deepwater Horizon disaster.  One of the better is from the Deepwater Horizon Study Group published in March 2011.  http://ccrm.berkeley.edu/pdfs_papers/bea_pdfs/dhsgfinalreport-march2011-tag.pdf

Without question the responsibility of this disaster falls directly on BP feet.  As the exploration company and the lease holder they were 100% responsible for the actions of everyone associated with that rig and well.  Lots of companies and individuals made mistakes and cut corners leading up to the actual blowout.  IMO it was BP's responsibility to ensure every individual and every company complied with all state and federal laws and standard industry practices.  There is a reason these laws and safety practices are in place.

The movie definitely makes it look like the on site BP execs were pushing and cutting corners because they were weeks behind schedule.

Actually it's even more sinister than that.

BP knew it had found a mega reservoir, possibly the largest accumulation of oil in the entire GoM.  This lease is called  Mississippi Canyon Block 252, abbreviated MC252. The Macondo Prospect is what they had named it.  BP  had 3 years of seismic data and this was the 2nd well they had drilled into the reservoir.  They had attempted to drill this well back in October 2009 but the rig was unsuccessful.  It ran into many problems and was just not advanced enough to successfully drill into a reservoir this deep in the ground and in +5000' of water.  By December 2009 BP abandoned that attempt and decided to bring in a bigger rig.

In January 2010 BP contracted with Trans Ocean Drilling to bring the worlds largest and most sophisticated drill ship to the GoM to drill another well into MCB 252.  That rig was called the Deepwater Horizon. They were under a time crunch because BP executives wanted to be able to announce this mega discovery before their quarterly earnings reports were due in the spring of 2010.  The drill ship and BP engineers and managers worked hard for nearly 3 months to complete this well in time for their quarterly earnings report.  In their hast to complete the well and make a huge announcement there were corners cut and safety processes skipped.  The crew on the Deepwater Horizon were just days away from completing the well when the disaster struck.  This discovery along with BP's discovery of huge amounts of oil and gas off the coast of Africa would have made BP stock skyrocket and would have moved BP in a solid second place and within striking distance of Exxon Mobile.  This well and the push to complete it was all about Market Capital and BP's place on the world oil and gas stage.

Not yet that I know of.  BP still owns the lease but has never been able to secure another Permit to Drill from the Feds.  I don't blame the feds on that though.  BP needs to finish paying for the first disaster before they start another.

Pathetic.....just another case of blood for oil.
