ROCKWOOD, Maine (WGME) -- The Maine Warden Service says a 56-year-old New Hampshire man died Sunday night after breaking through the ice while snowmobiling on Moosehead Lake.

Wardens says around 9:00 p.m., Steven Allard, of South Hampton, New Hampshire and his wife were snowmobiling together on two separate sleds and were returning to Rockwood Cottages.

When they got back to the shoreline where the trail meets the lake, Allard left and looped around towards the mouth of the Moose River when he broke through the ice, according to wardens.

We rode across a bunch of lakes this past weekend and even the ones that are marked out got slushy after a bunch of sleds went over it. They all froze and then melted and then got a ton of snow on top, they may never be totally frozen now.

At this point even if they do freeze that top layer there will most likely be 2 layers of ice and breaking through that thin top layer really sucks.

They cancelled the St. Germain radar run for the 31st and 1st.  Ice just not consistent enough on West Bay.

And can scare the shit out of one when not expecting it. That being said , most who drop thru get scared and hit the brakes instead of the throttle.

I know exactly where he went through. It’s open almost all winter at the mouth.

very sad. I feel for his wife as I always ride with mine. She must be devastated.

Yep, been by there on a lot colder winters and that is still open. Whats that hotel right there Maynards?

I think that’s it. We stayed at the Birches a few times. The club just marked the lake crossing to the Birches.

How do you guys even know if he was a good guy?

Maybe he was a fukkin' punk.

Maybe he hurt people.

Maybe he had a big fukkin' punk mouth.

Maybe he caused trouble everywhere he went.

Maybe he got in fist-fights with people.

Maybe he was a criminal.

Maybe he drank like a mother-fukker and didn't care if he smashed into somebody.

Maybe, he was a good guy, but we don't know.  :wtf:

Do you ride that area a lot

We did many years ago when we saddlebagged Northern Maine and Quebec. We watched 2 Patriots Superbowl wins staying at the Birches. The wives liked the Birches and the guys did too as they cooked meals and had a bar.

Guy didn't stay on the marked trail and went right into the mouth of the river basically, sucks for sure. If a lake is marked and you don't know it you should follow the stakes

Yup, and you never ride near the inlets were the currents are strong.  We were on Canada Falls Lake just yesterday, and you have to be careful up near the damn.

How do you even know she gave a shit?

Maybe she's been fuckin' Tyrone at work for the last year, and is glad her husband is gone, so now she is free to bang Tyrone, and gets the house and money???

Wouldn't surprise me if your wife secretly hopes you take the deep six.

Couple of sleds and vehicles went thru the ice up in Houghton Lake this past weekend.  I didn't hear if there were any injuries or deaths. Sounded like the details were still being gone thru. Was a busy weekend up there this past weekend.
