Fact check: FBI Director confirmed under oath that Hillary Clinton never lied about her email

One of the central claims coming out of the 2016 Republican National Convention in general, and from the mouth of Donald Trump in particular, is that Hillary Clinton lied to the FBI about her email and/or violated the law in other ways yet she was somehow let off the hook for those lies and crimes. But a check of the facts reveals that not only are those claims false, the Director of the FBI confirmed as much in his own direct words while he was under oath.

When FBI Director James Comey was hauled into the House of Representatives by Republican Congressmen who were hoping to scandalize his decision not to indict Hillary Clinton, the incident ended up backfiring on live national television. When Comey was asked whether Clinton broke any laws, his answer was “My judgment is that she did not.” In other words, he didn’t indict her because there was nothing to indict her on. It’s not that he said there wasn’t enough to indict her on. He flat out said that she didn’t break any laws to begin with.

When Comey was asked whether Hillary Clinton lied or misled the investigation in any way, his answer was “We have no basis to conclude she lied to the FBI.” Once again, this is direct confirmation that absolutely no legal wrongdoing took place. She broke no laws. She was entirely truthful with investigators. There is no other way of interpreting his words. And he was under oath at the time; if he’d given anything other than direct answers, he could have been prosecuted for it.

So when Hillary Clinton stated that “my answers were truthful” she was in fact telling the truth about having told the truth. There is a bizarre article from the Washington Post this week which bends over backwards to claim that Clinton was somehow being dishonest because she was only referring to having been truthful to the FBI and not truthful to the American public.

However, the Post gets its basic facts wrong, as the State Department has already confirmed that the handful of emailsin question had been mislabeled to begin with, meaning that Hillary Clinton was truthful when she told the public that she had never sent or received classified information on a private server. Therefore she was being truthful when she claimed this week that she had been truthful throughout the email saga.

We expect that the Washington Post will end up having to issue a retraction of its article, as it’s riddled with too many easily disproven factual inaccuracies to be left unchecked once the ensuring controversy surrounding the article reaches the Public Editor level. This is similar to how the New York Times misreported supposed Hillary Clinton wrongdoing regarding her email last year in an article which was so thoroughly fictional that it ended up needing two different retractions in order to walk it all back.

Even with no doubt or controversy whatsoever regarding the fact that Hillary Clinton never lied to anyone about her email and never violated any laws of any kind, the media continues to turn it into one of the most willfully misreported stories in American history – presumably either for the sake of ratings and attention, or to appease those biased audience members who mistakenly yet irrevocably want to believe that Clinton did something wrong.
