The Mighty Fitz...44 Years Ago Today

Recommended Posts

Its pretty crazy to think that in 1975 a huge freighter could be caught off guard by weather and be sunk by a big wave. Lake Michigan is a mean bitch no doubt.

Ive been to Whitefish Point where the shipwreck museum is. Its a pretty interesting place.

RIP to the 29 sailors who perished that stormy night.

Lake Superior and they frequently over loaded those ships with iron ore.

Lake Superior. Got it.

Yea i would bet the ship was overloaded.

“But this is a modern tanker and, it’s just an inland lake.....what could go wrong?  Besides, a bitchen, eerie song could be derived from it!”

Nailed it.

I watched a documentary on the YouTubes a couple weeks back on the Edmund Fitzgerald. Pretty interesting show. Some speculation they didn't have the hatch covers secured correctly and it was taking on water. Didn't say anything about being overloaded.  Lots of theories on why it went down but no one knows for sure.

Experienced captain and crew but it still sank. Just goes to show how dangerous those waters are.

No. The story behind the Fitz is pretty interesting. Read a few books about her.

RIP sailors, you've crossed the bar and stood your last watch.  :bc:
