When will electric vehicles begin to outsell internal combustion vehicles?

When/if electric cars and trucks out number gas vehicles the fees they would need to collect will get very expensive, some states already charge an extra small fee as there is not yet an abundance of electric vehicles, that will change.

Some years back "Mother Earth" magazine had gasoline powered cars and trucks converted and running on Hydrogen.

Combustion engines, no matter the fuel are still very complex and inefficient.  Yes batteries need more improvements, but electric is the future like it or not. 

 

For me, I like the idea of one moving part instead of...

 

Pistons, crank shafts, cams, injectors, spark plugs, fuel pumps, oil pumps, oil filters, alternators, water pumps, belts, hoses, radiators, mufflers, catalytic converters, transmissions, differentials, etc etc etc....

But up until that time they can keep increasing the fuel tax.

It’s really a no brainer. Electric is the way of the future. Ease of production, cost containment, durability, ultra low cost to maintain. Get the charge capacity up to 500-700 miles and recharge time down to 15 minutes and people will wave good bye to petro cars. It’s coming.

Where did you read that?

Teslas use electric motors that have two moving parts, and single-speed “transmissions” that have no gears. The company says its drivetrain has about 17moving parts compared with about 200 in a conventional internal combustion drivetrain. The Tesla system is virtually maintenance-free.

Total parts, not just the engine / motor. Have to factor in transmissions, differentials, fuel pumps etc.

Drivetrain generally includes many of those.   Guess it depends on what they call "moving" and the difference between drivetrain and powertrain.  

Honestly even at the smaller scale you would think electric cars are much, much less expensive to make.  

A drivetrain warranty includes the transmission, driveshaft, axles, and wheels, but it does not include the engine. A powertrain warranty covers everything that makes a vehicle move, from the engine to the transmission to the parts that allow power to travel from the engine to the wheels.

Who cares if your truck sucks gas when it’s loaded or towing. But if you could go full electric for 60-100 milles empty, there would be huge fuel savings. 

Ford has the plugin hybrid f150 coming out next year.

Toyota seems to be leading the pack with solid state battery tech. They have a functioning vehicle. Toyota has been on the forefront for sometime.

When you think about how shitty the mileage is in town for a truck, this would be huge. 

When I left for work, the first 4 vehicles were trucks with one person in them. Add mine and that’s 5. All in town none looked loaded or where towing.

Fisker is also working on solid state. They plan to have a reasonable priced (40k) car out in the next 2 years.
