What does that cost for a family of 4? Compare that to a landline in 1980 with long distance.

Cell phone and plans for a family of 4 is considerably more expensive than a land line. Most families I know are paying $180 - $300 per month for their cell plans, a land line per month would be $75 or less.

Yup...credit card debt is also the American way.

But you're right...it's their own problem just like living paycheck to paycheck in most instances.

I delivered papers when I was 8. I started with 80 customers and passed it on to my brother when I was 12 with 120 customers.

25 cents a week per customer then and I made about ten bucks in tips. Bought a new Schwinn with baskets after 6 months on credit my dad negotiated with the bike dealer and I paid him 5 bucks a week for 10 weeks. Every day the truck would dump off my papers out front at 2. It took 2 hours to deliver, 3 on pay day. Every day during summer vacation it sucked having to leave my friends to do delivery. I still have silver coins from then, even a few silver dollars. It made me want to excel and attend college.

Yeah rhe paper route was a very good financial learining experience at an early age. Actually the tips were a big part of the pay.  Especially when colecting at Christmas time.

Outside of my regular route I did some one off'd where a bunch of us would deliver the weekly community paper.  So one week we came across a ditched box of porno mags during our delivery.  So rather than leave them behind we figured we would take them with us and then put one in every mailbox with the paper.

We were never asked to do that again.

Well, having fun is important also. Much rather have had some fun in life than be the richest guy in the graveyard.

Well I definitely had a lot of fun and I still could have and been smarter about some things. I was just running with the wrong people for a few years. I got into alot of the wrong stuff. Glad I was at least smart enough to walk away from that.

In the old days you had local and long distance easy enough to be 100 to 150 a month.
