Set the input on the TV to the relevant hdmi port and then press Fn + F1, might have to press it more than once to get it to push output to the hdmi port. 

I Googled it, looks like F1 is the button on Dell, it differs by brand.

tv is about 5 years old but so is the laptop ....they are both about to go in the pool

Hey Benny, don't feel bad...can't get one of my TV's to work right either.  I decided I'd like to keep the screen "crack free" so I stopped fucking with it.
