AP Poll: 78 Percent Say Public School Teachers Aren't Paid Enough

WASHINGTON (AP) — Americans overwhelmingly believe teachers don’t make enough money, and half say they’d support paying higher taxes to give educators a raise.

The findings of the new poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research come amid recent teacher strikes and other protests over low pay, tough classroom conditions and the amount of money allocated to public schools in several Republican-led states.

Tens of thousands of Arizona teachers voted last week to strike after rejecting an offer of a 20-percent raise, because it didn’t include a vow from state lawmakers not to further cut taxes before providing more money for the state’s schools.

“To educate children and barely get a living is obnoxious,” said Elaine Penman, a company manager in Tucson, Arizona, who added she and others went outside to cheer on protesting teachers who were marching by. She’s among the 50 percent of Americans who say they’d pay a higher tax bill if it meant more money for teachers.

The thing about teachers is there are really good ones and really bad ones. I think it's a pretty Noble profession but some of these people just shouldn't be in it.

The problem is there are way too many over paid administrators. Front of classroom teachers are underpaid.

Lets see your numbers.  My ex made about 70 grand a year plus bennies for working 9 months a year.  Her total package was bout 85k.  She wasn't underpaid, and that was 10 fuckin years ago.  Are we having a teacher shortage?

They make 100K here, what you then get is more drawn to the profession for the perks, rather than the love of the career.  There are good and real bad ones and rampant abuse of the system with protections that hinder efficiencies.

My father always told me, "If you ever complain that you aren't being paid enough, look over your shoulder at the applicants that are ready and able to take your position.  Your pay corresponds with those numbers."   The goal to $$$ is to perform at levels few can replicate.  Unions and tenures "fix" this performance model....against all rules of free market principles and create stagnancy and poor performance in the workplace.

That's usually the case in blue states. Is the Arizona teachers strike on the news by you? They get shit there. It's like that in many other states too.

Front of classroom teacher?

the average salary is 58k BUT many cities group their administrators salaries with their teachers.
