The home buying party is breaking up.

This is dead on. How long can you make a mortgage before it makes more sense to rent though?

It's a personal decision I suppose. I prefer to have the ability to put a urinal in my bathroom, because I want to. Or, not having to adhere to some landlords lease agreement, saying I'm not allowed to do burnouts in my driveway because I'm feeling frisky. "How long to pay a mortgage?" Depends on how diligent you are to paying it off, and how comfortable you are living under the hand of "the man".

That would be a great reason to buy a home if buying a home was affordable. Wages ain't keeping up though.

Well that's a good time to evaluate your situation.

When a mortgage is paid off you have a house while the renter has nothing except a rental bill twice as much as his mortgage payment would have been

(We need a "gold star" emoji) ^^^^ this right here!

That statement all depends on your location and somewhat political leanings.

You seem to be under the impression home buying is affordable.

For me, as an only child with well to do parents, I'm inheriting at least one paid off home... If it weren't for that I could be renting for life at this rate.

Affordable is also subjective. Some people want the big show and max themselves out. First house i bought was in 1998 and it was certainly not luxurious. But I lived in that piece of shit until I could afford to build a nice house last year

Nothing says you have to stay in the area you were raised. My first home was 45 minutes from my work area . my home now is a half hr

Huh? Why would you bring politics into this? I know liberals that are much better off than conservatives, vise versa. Has nothing to do with politics, it's all about planning. :pan:

And being responsible. I know people that make 600 a week and own a home. I also know people that make 3 k a week who are always broke

The worst off are the city kids who get an egregious degree in shit and want to live in the fanciest part of the city on a junk wage

some of the best off people I see here who started with basically nothing are trades people who plant roots in smaller towns and cities

I'm in NJ, everywhere is expensive unless I ditch my friends and family and move quite a ways.

Big cities are not affordable based on wages.  Big cities have political leanings.

Double yes. I work in a trade, and I have NEVER been out of work. Kids I grew up with, went to college, MBA, this that and, whatever. Out of work, laid off, or the ones successful, are trying to keep up with the Jones's ...

Depends on my situation, could rent the vacation home when not in use and donate the profit...
