Pickering is already linked to downtown Toronto by GO Transit, and the number of passengers using the service falls far below levels that would normally justify a subway.

The threshold for a subway is 10,000 people per hour; the GO station in Pickering sees 4,300 users per weekday, and the Markham station 875.

However, GO’s Lakeshore East line as a whole has a weekly average of almost 50,000 riders, and the Stouffville line which runs through Markham has a weekly average of 17,669 riders.

A subway out to Pickering would be costly; according to the TTC, the cost of extending into York Region, its most recent expansion, was roughly $380 million per kilometre.

You conveniently skip the part where he explains how Wynnebag already has far too much already in place to be able to just scrap it and throw that $ investment down the toilet like a fiscally irresponsible Government wouldn't think twice about doing

How many in Pickering commute towards the city everyday?  You're missing the potential.

Zero but I try to avoid going into the shithole with a passion.  Subways don't need to go underground.

a subway to Pickering is a great idea!

Most people in Pickering drive now because taking the GO is not convenient. Parking is a nightmare and if you don't board the train in Oshawa you will never get a seat!

People laughed at Edmund Burke (look him up) for his forward thinking ideas, as well!

They need to get a private contractor managing those projects that cost is fucking ridiculous :guzzle: put a tunnelling machine in the ground ASAP and don't take it out like ever :news:

Unfortunately transit to downtown Toronto will always be extremely costly to build.  There is so much in the way underground that needs to be relocated for access from surface to allow access.

Thats why the Eglinton subway will be behind and will have cost over runs   Toronto has a lot of buried utilities and access for the public thoroughfares has to be maintained.  We complain about lack of transit but then everyone complains if they are even slightly impacted by the construction.  Priorities for the city need to be set. 

Now if a private contractor is given full access and no restrictions so they can work 24/7 and close major streets off for days or weeks (instead of lane closures or reroutes) at a time then you could get production and lower costs.

 

Rail transit from Pickering also is near impossible. The current rail corridors are established.  Currently they are doing expansion work to the east on rail lines but there are already a pile of go trains running on the tracks  crews have 20 minutes between trains to work.   Hard to be productive. 

Unless there is a undeveloped corridor that rail could be added commuter trains from East are limited to Go trains and shared cooridors with freight trains.

Not sure how much it would help Pickering (the north part of the Region for sure), but putting a GO train to Ptbo (pop' 81,000) should be a no brainer on the CPR & ease pressures on the Lakeshore East line. The previous MPP didnt advocate a bit when Del Mastro was trying to get the train rolling

It all depends on schedule and cost.  

Is it worth parking a train in Peterborough every night on a siding?

what time fits?

trains would likely be a one way deal so riders need to fill.
