He doesn't have the right to go after the witness in his trial. That's the judges call and not unheard of in similar cases. Trump is a criminal defendant and that comes with restrictions set in place and enforced by the judge.

They aren't going to throw him in jail for contempt. Even if he were to get convicted on these charges he isn't going to jail. Obviously they will cut a former president a break.
